Mother’s Day Surprise!

Oh readers, you are really going to love this blog post.

As you know, I go to a boarding school, and have been since I was 11. As a result I haven’t been home for Mother’s Day since I was 10. That’s 6 Mother’s Days that my mum hasn’t had all 3 of her children for. That’s pretty sad, right?

Well, my dear readers, this weekend was exeat. Exeat is a joyous time where one can leave the school grounds and go home for the weekend. I live in Somerset, which is about 4 and a half hours travelling by train, so I don’t go home for exeat. I occasionally go out with friends, but I never actually go home.

Seeing that exeat weekend coincided with Mother’s Day, a small plan hatched in the back of my brain. How awesome would it be if I secretly got on a train and completely surprised my mum for Mother’s Day? Ringing my Dad, I put the plan into action. He bought train tickets home for Saturday 9th March and then tickets to go back to school on Sunday 10th March. He posted them to me without my Mum’s knowledge. I received them, and rang my sister to tell her to not make plans with Mum, as I was coming home, but she mustn’t know. My sister agreed, and the plan was sealed.

I told everyone at school about my plan, and they all agreed that it would be incredibly sweet. Every time I spoke to my Mum on the phone, she would complain about not having me there on Mother’s Day, and even got quite emotional. I so badly wanted to tell her to cheer her up, but I had to stay quiet – I knew it would be better as a surprise.

The night before I left, my Mum rang me when I was having coffee with a friend. She asked me to ring in the afternoon on Saturday, as she couldn’t talk at night because she was out for a meal with friends and my Dad. I kept my voice light and cheerful, but when the call ended, I was raging. I angrily rang my Dad, demanding to know what he was playing at. He calmly explained that he had rung Mum’s friend and asked her to cancel the dinner by pretending her husband was ill or something, which she had done. I apologised and began to calm down. Thank God for that.

On the way home, I decided to text my mum to see how she was, and had to pretend to be shocked that her friend had cancelled their dinner. She rang me, but I had to decline the call, claiming that she wouldn’t hear me over the wind as I was walking down town. She asked me who I was with, and I had to pretend that I was with Fran and Harley. Luckily, she bought my story.

My Dad had planned to take my Mum to the cinema and then out for dinner, and when I randomly appeared, I would go with them. Unfortunately, my final train was cancelled and I had to catch a later one. Struggling to find a reason to cancel their night, my Dad pretended to suddenly be taken ill, and kept having to run to the toilet to text me back. My Mum was so annoyed at him cancelling, and stormed round the house.

Knowing my Dad’s acting skills were really being tested here, I ran home as soon as I got to the station. Out of breath, I reached the door and pressed the doorbell. No answer. Typical. I pressed it again, and soon heard the patter of feet racing down the stairs. I braced myself as the door handle turned. My heart was racing and I was still breathless. A smile was fixed on my face as my Mum opened the door.

The look on her face was priceless. She stood still in complete shock, not saying a word, mouth wide open. I ran in and hugged her, but she couldn’t hug me back – she was so shocked. She kept asking ‘What are you doing here? Why are you here?’ over and over. My Dad and brother flew down the stairs and began laughing. It finally clicked in my Mum’s brain and she ran into the living room, completely surprised. She turned into a child, jumping on the couch and hugging everyone for a good 20 minutes. She then rang her friend, my sister and my grandma, unable to believe that they knew and didn’t tell her. It was hilarious. Despite missing the cinema, we still went out for dinner.

Today, we had the whole family down: My Grandma, Grandad, sister and her husband and daughter came to my house for lunch with me, my Mum, Dad and brother. It was so lovely being all together, and made it even harder when I had to leave. I only had 22 hours at home, but what an amazing 22 hours it was. I felt so emotional getting on the train back to school, but it was totally worth the 10 hour journey there and back.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mum. I love you.
